Is Your Website Hard To See On Mobiles?

Is Your Website Mobile Friendly?

According to Mashable (October 2015) “50% of all Google searches now come from mobile phones” these are customer searches via any mobile device such as smartphone or tablet using a web browser such as Safari or Chrome. Customers who are looking for your business who can’t read your web pages on their mobile device will simply go to another website.

A site that is mobile friendly is one where the customer doesn’t have to ‘pinch and pull’ the screen to view content or to see the navigate buttons to get to your various web pages. Sites that work best on mobiles are simplified, have large features and text to help your customers navigate around your site.

What Results Did Your Website Get?

It is pretty rare to get a 100% perfect score unless you or your web developer have been focussing closely on designing your website to work in a mobile friendly (also known as mobile optimised) way.

If you got a result that indicates that your site is in need of attention then some elements can be simply fixed for example increasing the size of the buttons such as ‘Call Us’ or ‘Download’ or of course ‘Call Us’ (on most smartphones by pressing the telephone number they will dial the company when pressed).

This may not be the case however if your site is not coded, or in the case of WordPress sites ‘themed’ in a way that can be easily changed to improve mobile visibility. In these cases you will need to contact a professional web developer to evaluate how to adapt or update your website.

Does It Matter If My Site Is Not Mobile Friendly?

Google announced in late 2014 that it would start to ‘down rank sites’ (that is reduce how well a site shows up in Google results) if they are not mobile enabled. Unlike other changes Google has made they have slowly started to deliver on their statement with small steps:

  1. In Google search results the wording ‘Not Mobile Friendly’ can be seen on mobile and desktop devices – effective early 2016
  2. Webmasters are starting to report a lower visibility of businesses in mobile results who have not upgraded their websites

Although not apparent yet the ultimate sanction that Google have floated to businesses is that companies websites will not appear at all in mobile search results. When this will happen is unclear, but at the pace of the first two steps we hazard a guess at early 2017.
